Dental implants or dentures?

On 14 February 2022

If you have one or more missing teeth you’d like replaced, you have multiple solutions to choose from. Two of the most prominent options are dental implants and dentures. Both solutions serve the same purposes, from improving your speech to increasing your self-esteem.

That being said, implants and dentures come with their own unique advantages and disadvantages. To help you make an informed decision about which option is right for you, we’ll compare the two solutions on several important topics.

Dental implants

Longevity

Dental implants are a permanent solution that can last 25 years or longer, whereas full dentures are removable and need to be replaced every five to 10 years. Dentures also need to be refitted occasionally, but you’ll likely never need your dental implants replaced (except possibly a crown if the original gets cracked somehow). It’s important to note, you can extend the life of both implants and dentures by maintaining them properly.

Maintenance

In terms of maintenance, dental implants require just as much maintenance as natural teeth. You can keep them in great condition by simply brushing and flossing regularly. Dentures, however, do require more care. They’re not supposed to be worn overnight, so they’re usually soaking in water during that period. After eating, they’ll also need to be removed and brushed.

Dental Implants Cost vs Dentures Cost

You can expect to pay in the low thousands for both, but dental implants cost more than dentures. This is because dental implants are permanent and require a minimally invasive procedure, unlike dentures, which are removable and non-invasive.

While dental implants cost more, they should be viewed as an investment due to their longevity. It’s difficult to say which solution will actually end up costing you more in the long run.

Which Option Is Right for You?

There are several things to consider when determining which option is best suited to you. If you can’t afford the initial investment of implants, you may need to opt for dentures. If you want a permanent solution rather than teeth that have to be taken out every time you sleep, implants are probably the better option for you.

Of course, the state of your teeth also comes into play. If you’re only missing one or two teeth, for example, implants are a more realistic solution. Those with entire rows of teeth missing, however, may find receiving dentures easier than having so many implants inserted.
